Dear Reader,

Rumours of a European Super League have been around for the best part of a decade, but the news late last night that 12 clubs were actually moving ahead with the plans was still an enormous shock. Condemnation has been almost universal and, in his column, Jamie Carragher makes a potent case for why the super league is a disgrace and will not be accepted by fans. You can follow the latest developments on our liveblog.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral was a moving and fitting tribute to a great man. You can see the best photos from the day in this picture special. Now, however, thoughts are turning to how the monarchy must adapt to remain relevant in the coming years. Gordon Rayner reports on the plans being discussed by senior members of the Royal family on how to fill the void left by Prince Philip’s death and the departures of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke of York from royal duties.

No doubt the popularity of vaccines worldwide has taken a hit in recent weeks with the news that the AstraZeneca jab might be linked to extremely rare blood clots. Communication of the issue has left something to be desired, but why did it take so long to figure out what was going on? In an excellent in-depth report, Jennifer Rigby and Paul Nuki reveal how warning systems at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency went unnoticed. It’s an essential read.

For the past few weeks, our property team has been looking at the best commuter villages to move to from London post-pandemic. We have found options for every budget and today arrive at the 1 million mark. Check which villages make the list here.
