| When we started Hyperallergic 15 years ago, we were funded primarily by advertising from arts organizations and universities. For over 10 years, that allowed us to continue to grow and produce a publication we were proud of that was free and accessible, without a paywall.
But as the web evolved and the business of media changed, the need for something else to keep us sustainable became more and more urgent. So in 2020, we launched our membership program to ask our readers to support us directly. And since then, the need for member support has only grown. We’ve never put up a paywall and don’t limit access to our criticism or journalism. We want anyone, anywhere, to be able to learn about art, to be inspired by artists, and to have access to reliable and trustworthy information, regardless of their ability to pay. But we can’t continue to do this without your help. That’s why we are urgently asking you to support us by becoming a member. We understand that you don’t necessarily want to keep hearing about membership. But the new members that come from these campaigns help make everything else we do possible. While other art sites are owned by corporations and billionaires, or are supported by the rich, we remain independent, supported by non-profit sponsors and directly by our members. This year has been especially challenging. Due to our reporting and political shifts in the art world, we’ve lost some of our biggest sponsors and the few foundation grants we depended on. It has not been easy, but our membership program has kept us alive and given us hope for a new way forward. To keep our operations fully funded and to continue our work in 2025, we’ll need thousands more of you to join. We can’t do this without you.
