Now the British Grand Prix clash with Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s request to review is firmly behind us, will Max Verstappen change his F1 approach?
Verstappen’s Silverstone exit and Hamilton’s subsequent victory cost 25 of his 33-point World Championship lead. Although I saw it as a 60-40 accident, with Hamilton being 60% to blame, that 40% on Max unearths a weakness. Paradoxically, it was Verstappen’s unwillingness to cede ground to Hamilton that proved so harmful – his win-at-all-costs approach displayed a lack of ‘big picture’ thinking.
It reminds me of Ayrton Senna, who was similarly one-dimensional until he came across Alain Prost in a title fight. The Professor wasn’t called that for nothing, and Ayrton found the way to beat him was to be just as smart and (race)crafty.
Or should Max just stick to what he’s best at – going faster? |
