Japan is at the forefront of technological development. Yet, it is a land of paradoxes, with culture and tradition mingling with technological advancements. One of the countries with the oldest populations, its aging population is averse to disruptive technology. For much of Japan’s older generation, digital payments are still an anathema—physical cash is preferred to digital wallets and electronic money. The rise of mobile payments against the checkered history of digital payments in the country, however, has been intriguing. Though Japan is home to DoCoMo, one of the foremost mobile commerce companies globally, it is still a cash-dominated economy. |
