Will 200% EU wine tariffs change U.S. drinking habits?

Jennifer Thornton is bringing a new cooking school to Northeast Ohio. Buttercream and Olive Oil is in a renovated convenience store in North Royalton and is on schedule to start classes in mid-April. READ MORE 

 

Bar Louie closures

Bar Louie has permanently closed its locations in Northeast Ohio at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst and Crocker Park in Westlake, with signs appearing on doors as of March 26. The Texas-based chain, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2020, now has only one Ohio location remaining in Perrysburg, reports Alex Darus. READ MORE

Build The Pho expands with two new locations in Cleveland

Build The Pho is expanding with two new locations in Ohio City and North Olmsted, bringing Vietnamese noodle soup to more areas throughout Greater Cleveland. Owner Eric Weng opened the first Build The Pho location in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood at 11440 Euclid Avenue in 2022. READ MORE  

 

Ramp Up Peninsula festival celebrates wild onions 

The Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the the wild onion known as a ramp with the Ramp Up Peninsula festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 26. The festival includes a number of food vendors selling everything from Bloody Stink’ Marys to pickled ramps, bread, scones and much more. Check out the bounty as Purplebrown Farm Store. The Arcade on Detroit to open in Lakewood this April 

The Arcade on Detroit is scheduled to open in April, according to owner Dan Deagan, who operated Deagan’s Kitchen and Bar in the same space for 13 years. The menu is mostly tavern influenced with pizza, wings and such. The bar will offer 28 beers on tap, wine and spirits. Classic and craft cocktails will be available, with a fishbowl serving option. Wayback Burgers opening in Stow

A new Wayback Burgers location is opening in Stow's Fishcreek Plaza this June, marking the chain's sixth Ohio restaurant. The 1,880 square-foot eatery will feature a transparent kitchen and various seating options, offering made-to-order burgers, sandwiches, and hand-dipped milkshakes, reports Marc Bona. READ MORE

 

New Mexican restaurant to replace Twisted Taino in Parma

Award-winning Caribbean restaurant Twisted Taino is closing at the end of March, with Hot Nachitas Taqueria opening in the same space on April 1. The new Mexican takeout concept will be run by Christina Melendez, wife of Twisted Taino owner Jose Melendez, featuring authentic tacos, burritos and other Mexican fare in a retro 1950s diner setting, Paris Wolfe reports. Avon wine bar Cork and Barrel to close

Cork and Barrel Wine Bar and Restaurant has announced that it’s going out of business. The restaurant at 35800 Detroit Road announced the news on its social media pages. Its last day in business will be Saturday, April 19, giving customers a few more weeks to visit before closing permanently. READ MORE

 

Original Pancake House opening in Strongsville this summer  

Cleveland Restaurant Management Group is opening a new Original Pancake House in Strongsville this July, taking over the former Rico's Tacos and Tequila location. The 162-seat restaurant will feature major renovations including a 60-seat patio, vaulted wood-beam ceilings, and a stone fireplace, reports Paris Wolfe. READ MORE

Grand River Valley Ice Wine Festival  

Six Northeast Ohio wineries and a distillery are celebrating the 22nd annual ice wine festival. Debonné Vineyards, Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Grand River Cellars, Laurello Vineyards, Cask 307, South River Vineyards and Red Eagle Distillery are all participating in daily tastings. Cost is $10 per winery for wine samples and appetizers. Madison and Geneva.  Through Sunday, March 30. READ MORE 

 

Fish fry season 

It’s fish fry season at many non-profits across Northeast Ohio. Churches, VFW halls and other places are hosting dinners featuring everything from perch to pierogies. Times and dates vary based on location, but the churches and groups are located from Amherst to Willoughby. Fridays through Lent (Good Friday is April 18). It guide is updated weekly. READ MORE

Alexander Pierce wine dinner 

Alexander Pierce restaurant is holding a dinner featuring wine from Implicit Cellars. Winery co-owner Ed Kuchar will help guide the six-course tasting dinner that features the California winery. Masthead Brewing Company 

It’s not required to eat fried fish on Fridays during Lent. Change it up with the wood-fired pizza at Masthead Brewing Company in Cleveland. If you haven’t given up beer as your personal sacrifice for the Catholic, pre-Easter season, pair your favorite brew with any of the meatless pizzas. Tony’s Burger Shop 

Tony’s Burger Shop is a recent addition to the Van Aken Market District in Shaker Heights that’s worth checking out. The simple shop by chef Anthony Zappola serves up smashburgers, chicken tenders, onion rings and more. Daily specials include fried fish sandwiches on Fridays during Lent or cherry pepper burgers. Big Eye Japanese Cuisine & Sushi Bar 

Big Eye, an Asian restaurant in Akron, has a strong focus on sushi – a LOT of sushi - but there are plenty of other dishes as well (the octopus salad is wonderfully fresh, and the shrimp stir fry was a tasty Friday-night Lenten treat). If you’re feeling adventurous with a group, try the dragon boat – a not-so-small wooden boat that is filled with sushi and other delicacies. Sibling Revelry’s ‘Augusta’ beer is peachy keen on or off the green 

Augusta Peach Wheat from Sibling Revelry Brewery marks the arrival of spring in Cleveland with its low ABV, crisp flavor and Georgia peach notes. Classic CLE Eats & Drinks columnist Peter Chakerian reports that the beer had to change its packaging after nearly facing legal action from Augusta National Golf Club over its original Masters-inspired design.
