Lions suffer first loss of the season |
Mistakes kept piling up for the Detroit Lions as they fell 20-16 on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Lions finished 1 of 7 in the red zone overall. That includes a costly mistake by Dan Campbell, who sent his field-goal unit onto the field while Goff was trying to spike the football with 3 seconds left before halftime. Aidan Hutchinson’s performance in the game put him in the Lions’ history books, securing the second-most sacks in a single game by a Detroit player. "He made our life miserable over there. Hats off to him," Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said. Across the street, Riley Greene hit two home runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. |

Will the cherry become Michigan’s state fruit? Lawmakers considering it |
Trying to shake things up: A new bill with bipartisan support would make the cherry Michigan’s official state fruit. The bill, announced Thursday, Sept. 12, would place the cherry alongside such symbols as the Petoskey stone, trout, white-tailed deer and apple blossom. A bill to make the cherry Michigan’s state fruit has been put forward at least 10 separate times in the past two decades, according to Michigan Legislature records. The last time was in 2020, but that bill didn’t make it out of committee. An update: Backlash to changes state game regulators have made to early deer seasons reserved for youth and hunters with disabilities has reached the State House in Lansing. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, a Republican state senator introduced a bill that he says would undo new limitations on the special liberty and independence hunts making them “antlerless only” beginning in 2025 and prohibiting participants from shooting bucks. Gichigaming Water Walk: Indigenous tribal members from Michigan and Wisconsin carried containers of water 30 miles across the western Upper Peninsula to symbolize opposition to a proposed mine near Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. |

Cellphone ban in classrooms being piloted by an Ann Arbor high school |
New rule: Teens at Skyline High School are getting an early look at learning without their cellphones potentially dividing their attention in class. Under a new pilot policy this school year, the school’s 1,300 students are now expected to place their phones in a pocket chart – similar to hung shoe racks – where they remain until class ends or are unless asked to use them for an educational reason by a teacher. End of a local dispute: Months after a former Ann Arbor kindergarten teacher accused a school administrator of stealing a therapy dog in her care, Gracie, the bernedoodle, is back home. Speaking of dogs: With the help of an energetic social media influencer, the Big Lake Humane Society in Muskegon raised $18,200 in three hours. |

JD Vance to speak near Grand Rapids |
Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance is scheduled to speak near Grand Rapids the same day his running mate delivers his own remarks in Flint. The Ohio senator will speak at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Harris, Trump aren’t alone: State election officials last week gave county clerks the go-ahead to begin printing election ballots for November, a Michigan Secretary of State representative said. Here’s the full lineup of president candidates on Michigan ballots. In environmental: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is busy passing coho salmon through the lower weir on the Platte River at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with the onset of the annual fall migratory spawning run. |

Charles Brantley gets redemptive 100-yard pick-six for Michigan State |
Wow: During Michigan State’s 40-0 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Charles Brantley wrote his name in the Spartans' history books. Brantley intercepted a pass in his own end zone and returned it the length of the field to get a touchdown. In doing so, he broke a four-decade-old record for the longest interception return in school history. Dan Bass previously set the record with a 99-yard touchdown in 1978. In Ann Arbor: Michigan’s football team concluded its nonconference schedule Saturday with a 28-18 victory over Arkansas State. The Wolverines opted to bench QB Davis Warren in the third quarter, the first sign that Michigan may look in a different direction moving forward. In high school football: Holton Public Schools cancelled its remaining varsity football conference games for the season. |
