Once upon a time, the pollution at Owens lake in California was so bad that it compromised the mission of the nation’s largest on-land naval base. As early as the '80s, dust storms prompted a flurry of studies which discovered a dust known as PM10 was blowing off the south end of Owens Lake. By the '90s, the U.S. Geological Survey published a study stating that the environmental situation was so bad it resulted in millions of dollars in economic losses.

Challengers call Utah Rep. Burgess Owens ‘coward’ for pulling out of debate

Candidates for Utah's 4th Congressional District Darlene McDonald and January Walker had strong words for Rep. Burgess Owens Wednesday night after he pulled out of the debate at the last minute.

Owens declined to come to the event because Salt Lake Tribune Executive Editor Lauren Gustus was set to moderate.In 2021, the paper published a political cartoon that compared Owens, who is Black, saying “They are coming to your neighborhoods” in reference to immigrants at the U.S. southern border to a Ku Klux Klan member saying the same thing 70 years ago.

Gustus asked McDonald and Walker how their feelings differed from Owens on the subject of immigration. How did they respond?
