Windows tip of the week

Delay or defer Windows 10 updates

By Ed Bott

When it comes to Windows updates, taking a wait-and-see approach is the best way to avoid unpleasant surprises. On Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions, you can use Windows Update for Business settings to delay updates by a set number of days after their official release. (Sorry, this feature isn't offered on PCs running Windows 10 Home.)

You can defer quality updates, which typically arrive on the second Tuesday of each month, by up to 30 days.

You can defer the semi-annual feature updates by up to 365 days. However, Microsoft recommends setting this deferral period to no more than 180 days, to avoid the possibility that your current version will hit its end-of-service deadline before the deferral period runs out.

(A third Windows Update for Business feature, the availability of separate servicing channels for consumers and business customers, is no longer available as of Windows 10 version 1903.)

To set deferral periods on an individual PC, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Click Advanced Options and adjust the values under Choose When Updates Are Installed.

To set deferral periods for multiple PCs, use the Group Policy settings found under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business.
