Turn your Windows 10 PC into a mobile hotspot

By Ed Bott

You probably know how to tether your mobile phone to turn it into a hotspot for your PC, but did you know that Windows 10 can do the same trick in reverse?

This trick comes in handy on occasions when you have a wired network connection via your PC's Ethernet port and you want to share that bandwidth with another PC or with a mobile device. It's also a potential money-saver if you've paid for a Wi-Fi connection in a hotel or other public spot and you want to avoid having to pay for a second connection.

Your hardware has to support this capability, of course, so you'll need either a Wi-Fi adapter or Bluetooth in addition to your (wireless or wired) Internet connection.

To configure the mobile hotspot, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot. There, you can change the network name (the SSID that shows up on other devices) and change the default password to something you can remember.

You'll also find an on-off switch on that Settings page, but after you've adjusted the settings it's easier to click the network icon in the notification area and use the Mobile Hotspot button.

An introduction to multicloud (free PDF)

Over a decade after the launch of Amazon Web Services, Amazon continues to benefit from the “first mover” position. While AWS is still the market leader, cloud services from other industry titans such as Google or Microsoft have increased in popularity (as have specialized services from other vendors), preventing Amazon from having hegemonic control of the cloud market.
