Windows taskbar tricks

By Ed Bott

The Windows taskbar is more than just a row of pinned icons that you can click to launch a program (or switch to that program, if it's already running). Here are three taskbar tricks every Windows expert should master.

First, for programs that support multiple instances (including all the Microsoft Office desktop apps and File Explorer), hold down Shift as you click a taskbar icon to open a new instance of a program that's already running. If you want to compare two Word documents side by side or copy files from one folder to another, this will save you a few clicks.

Second, learn how to use Jump Lists. Right-click any taskbar icon to see a list of time-saving quick actions and shortcuts to recent documents for that program.

Finally, learn how to customize Jump Lists by right-clicking a recently used item to pin it to the list. You can also drag items onto their associated program icon: Drag any file or folder and drop it onto the File Explorer taskbar icon to pin it to the Jump List for quick access.
