Dr. Rosa Colquitt is the new party Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon. However, more than a decade before being elected to this position, Dr. Colquitt got her start in politics volunteering to work on grass-roots projects for democracy here in Oregon. Even as a full time academician and researcher at OHSU back in 2008, Dr. Colquitt worked with neighbors and friends to start a community group of volunteers to campaign for then Senator Barack Obama as the nationâs first African American President. It was through this experience that she says she learned about the âurgency and power of grassroots volunteers.â
Dr. Colquitt explains that âit is through the power of individual volunteers, building strong teams, that we become the frontline of protecting our communities and achieving Democratic victories.â
But she doesnât just âtalk the talkâ, Dr. Colquitt truly walks the walk.
For 2020 - 21, Dr. Colquitt was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award forby the Democratic Party of Oregon (DPO) She has served as Vice Chair of the DPO as well as chair of the Black Caucus and R.E.A.L., the special committee on Racial Equity, Accountability and Leadership. She was also Chair of the DPO Budget Committee during 2019-2020 and 2021-2022.

From Gold Hill to Medford to Ashland, the Jackson County Democrats have been out engaging with folks from across our diverse county. In the past few months, we've reached out to voters and potential voters at our booths in Gold Hill's Gold Dust Days, Meford Pride and Ashland's 4th of July festivities. In every community event we've visited we've found more folks who share our values and potential "Blue" voters. A great group of Jackson County Democrats marched in Ashland's July 4th parade and we were met with overwhelming support from the crowd.
Can you help us engage with more communities in Jackson County? Please consider joining our team to help with future events. We're looking for people who are good at logistics (event planning, equipment mobilization, scheduling, training) as well as volunteers to staff different events. Email Chair@jcdemocrats.org if you want to get involved!
Volunteers run this organization. We do it because we care about our democracy. We believe we have agency as Jackson County Democrats. We make a difference.

Local politics often get buried by the mediaâs obsessive coverage of Washington, D.C. In the months ahead, weâll use this space to help you prepare to make informed choices in 2024 â not just at the national and state level, but right here in Jackson County. This month, letâs focus briefly on the County Assessor.
Our incumbent County Assessorâs tenure has been disastrous. His careless errors have caused grief for thousands of Jackson County taxpayers. Hereâs just one article about how Almeda fire survivors have suffered. Unfortunately, this is only one example of his blunders.
In 2024, county voters will have the opportunity to elect a new assessor. Itâs a nonpartisan position that should attract candidates with appropriate technical skills and considerable professional experience â including management, ideally. And of course, they should see themselves as public servants accountable to the voters. Unfortunately, the eligibility requirements are pretty minimal. As voters, we often donât know who is really qualified for a position like this. But we have time to learn! Start here.
And if you know anyone whom you believe would make a good assessor, encourage them to run!
If you really want to make a positive difference in your community, our county and our state, it's time to consider running for an elected position.
The list below shows the elective offices that will be on Jackson County ballots in 2024. We encourage every reader to consider serving their community, county, and state by running for something.
Nowâs a good time to simply imagine. Now â when you have time to get used to the idea. Candidates for most elective offices donât have to file until next March for the May 21st Oregon Primary. Candidates for city offices donât have to file until next summer for the November 5th general election.
The Jackson County Democrats are here to help you consider a run for public office.
If you are a registered Democrat in Jackson County, we have knowledgeable people (past and present office holders and experienced campaign personnel) ready to answer your questions about running for public office. Send an email to Chair@jcdemocrats.org and weâll help you learn about the process.
