Winter Campaign News, CHPO Releases New Watch to Celebrate Our Anniversary and the 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Our Winter Campaign

Skateistan

There’s so much we’ve achieved in 2018! This year many of our students learned how to skateboard for the first time, became role models and leaders in their communities, built their confidence in girls-only skate sessions, passed 1st grade, met new friends and so much more!

As we get closer to the end of the year, we're excited to let you know about our upcoming winter campaign, which will focus on diversity and inclusion. We believe that skateboarding is for everybody and we'll be looking to our supporters to help us ensure that we can bring the fun and freedom of skateboarding to as many children as possible. We'll be launching it next month so look out for it, and please consider supporting us if you can.

Making a Splash at the Olympism In Action Forum

Oliver and Tin on stage

Skateistan’s founder Oliver Percovich and our Phnom Penh Programs Officer, Tin, went to Buenos Aires earlier this month to attend the Olympism in Action Forum which preceded the Youth Olympic Games.

They each made a speech to share the inspiring story of Skateistan and how we empower children through skateboarding and education. Their speeches were followed by loads of praise on social media and they were also listed by the Olympic Channel as one of the top 10 moments of the conference, which, of course, makes us extremely happy.

How to Change the World, One Step at a Time

Big changes begin with small steps. That’s why we recently launched a new curriculum called Act Local where students explore how their local actions could have a global impact.

So last week, every student at our Skate School in Cambodia spent time thinking about small things they can do to help change the world. During the discussion, the children also created a book identifying their place in the world.

Learning About Time in Cambodia

Cambodia

Students in our Skate School in Phnom Penh have been learning about time over the last few weeks. This part of the Skate and Create curriculum included learning about the history of how people calculate time, learning to tell the time and making their own clocks. The students made their clocks from recycled plates so they've also been getting clued up about the importance of recycling and protecting the environment.

Celebrating International Day of the Girl

Skateistan

On International Day of the Girl (October 11), two of our staff members spent a day at the Royal Danish Residence in Pretoria, South Africa, participating in an event on women's empowerment. Incredible panellists and speakers, amongst whom was the daughter of Nelson Mandela, brought so much energy and passion to the event. The most inspiring part for us, of course, was the huge amount of ideas for how we can do more to empower girls at Skateistan.
