Women Farmers in Sustainable Agriculture Share Words of Wisdom for Women's History Month 2024

During Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the deep-rooted and ongoing contributions of women in agriculture. There are 1.2 million women producers in the United States, and according to the United States Department of Agriculture, 41% of beginning producers are women, and more than 28% of farmworkers are women. This week, we’re spotlighting a few sustainable women farmers in the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market who share why they farm, what they’ve learned, and their hopes for future generations of women farmers.

Pop-Ups on the Plaza: Celebrating Black Women Makers


On March 30, celebrate Women's History Month by joining us for a day of delicious food, community, and family fun at the Ferry Terminal Plaza and Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Shop from 12+ Black women-owned businesses, and enjoy cooking demos and crafts. Entry and activities are free, with food for purchase.

Farmers Market Finds with Chef Laurence Jossel


Nopa chef Laurence Jossel is a regular at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Tuesdays. While shopping at Everything Under the Sun, he shared ideas for how to use winter brassicas in the kitchen.

Pork Kikiam with Yuba Skin


At the Foodwise Classroom, Edmund Baylon, Junior Sous Chef at Restaurant Abacá, demonstrated his version of kikiam, a Filipino snack, made with ground pork and wrapped in Hodo yuba skin, found at the Ferry Plaza on Saturdays.

Mollie Sitkin runs Old Dog Ranch, a Regenerative Certified Organic farm in the San Joaquin Valley. At the farmers market on Saturdays, Old Dog Ranch offers plain and seasoned walnuts and walnut butters.

2024 SF Food Action Summit | March 3-4 | SF

Join FAACTS (Food and Agriculture Action Coalition Toward Sovereignty) for a community-led and centered summit to advance a good food system in San Francisco. Co-hosted by Foodwise, the two-day program at the Southeast Community Center in Bayview-Hunters Point will bring together diverse stakeholders including rural farmers, local producers, food service workers and unions, healthcare and restaurant leaders, and grassroots organizations for discussions, workshops, food tours, and more. Our goal is to walk away with a concrete action plan for addressing food system inequity with next steps toward a food-sovereign San Francisco. Purchase tickets here (scholarships are available).
