As we mark Labor Rights Week and celebrate Labor Day, Im so grateful to serve as Acting Secretary of Labor in the most pro-worker administration in history. Under President Biden's economic agenda, workers across the country are delivering new roads, safer bridges, affordable internet, clean drinking water, a cleaner climate and a manufacturing boom good jobs that support families and communities. At the Labor Department, we're empowering workers, building equity into all our actions and enforcing the law to make sure all workers have access to these jobs especially those who have been left out in the past. Honoring the Thai workers of the El Monte sweatshop In August 1995, 72 Thai garment workers were freed from forced labor in El Monte, California. The story sparked a national outcry and led to important labor reforms. In a few weeks, we'll induct them into our Labor Hall of Honor. Labor Rights Week 2023 During Labor Rights Week, partners around the country are emphasizing the importance of migrant workers' rights and how our enforcement agencies work with consulates to ensure their rights are upheld. We kicked off a series of nationwide events marking Labor Rights Week 2023 at our D.C. headquarters with the Embassy of Mexico, the National Labor Relations Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. |
New labor rights resources for migrant workers Our new website in English and Spanish makes it easier for migrant workers in the United States to find information about their rights and who to contact if they have a question or complaint. The site also features short videos answering common questions about wages, recruitment fees, workplace safety, bathroom access and more.
