Wiss-Nama Newsletter

WISS-NAMA is the newsletter of the Science and Technology Department of the German Embassy, New Delhi. The title is a combination of a German and an Indian word: WISS, an abbreviation of the German word 'Wissenschaft' (meaning science), and NAMA, a word used in Sanskrit and Persian contexts, standing for 'compendium' or 'handbook'.

IISc India’s best educational institution in HRD ministry’s NIRF rankings

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has emerged at the top of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by Human Resource Development Ministry that rates Indian higher educational institutes. The second edition of the rankings, compiled by the ministry of human resource development, lists seven Indian Institutes of Technology among the top 10—Madras (2), Bombay (3), Kharagpur (4), Delhi (5), Kanpur (7), Guwahati (8) and Roorkee (9). Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, clinched the sixth and the 10th positions respectively in the ranking based on five broad parameters—teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.

News from Indo-German Cooperation

European Research Council 10th Anniversary Event in New Delhi on March 29

An information-sharing and networking event was organised on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the European Research Council in New Delhi on March 29. The event was organised by the Delegation of the European Union to India (ERC), in association with embassies of the EU Member States and Associated Countries, and EURAXESS India. The event included speakers from the Delegation of the European Union to India, Indian Government, the ERC and ERC grant holders. It aimed to highlight the role of ERC in promoting excellence in research in Europe and India. The event was well attended by Post-Docs, Research Associates and Senior Scientists from Research institutes and Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors from various institutes and universities.

German Chancellor Fellowship for young leaders from India

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in cooperation with the German Embassy and the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) organised an information session about the German Chancellor Fellowship for prospective leaders from India on 28th March at the German Embassy. The fellowship offers prospective leaders from India the opportunity to conduct a project as guests of the partner of their choice in Germany, and is open to an array of sectors such as politics, economics, media, administration and culture. At the event, Ambassador Dr Martin Ney gave the opening speech and highlighted the longstanding bilateral cooperation in science and technology between India and Germany. Bernhard Steinrücke, Director General, IGCC, also welcomed the guests on the occasion. His talk was followed by by a detailed presentation on the “German Chancellor Fellowship for prospective leaders from India” by Walter Denk and Lisa Plitt from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session. Students, researchers, prospective applicants and multipliers were brought together with the representatives of the Humboldt Foundation at this info event.

Call for Proposals: Funding Opportunities and Scholarships

EU Call for Propasals - ERASMUS+ Programme 

Numerous Call for Proposals have been announced under the Erasmus+ Programme, the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport as well as on the 2016 and 2017 Erasmus+ annual work programmes. The Erasmus+ programme covers the period 2014 to 2020. Any public or private body active in the fields of education, training, youth and sport may apply for funding within this programme. In addition, groups of young people who are active in youth work, but not necessarily in the context of a youth organisation, may apply to learn mobility of young people and youth workers as well as for strategic partnerships in the field of youth. Under the ERASMUS+ programme there are a definite number of calls for proposals having different deadlines till October 2017.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation invites applications from Indian young professionals from wide range of fields such as politics, business, media, public administration, society and culture. The Fellowship for prospective leaders offers talented young professionals an opportunity to spend a year in Germany which they can use to advance their professional training and conduct together with their German host a project they have developed themselves.

Online double-master degree program by the University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany

The Institute for Environmental Sciences of the University of Koblenz-Landau has launched a new online double-master degree program that includes two different master courses, M.Sc. Environmental Science and M.Sc. Ecotoxicology. The online double-master degree program is designed for students from countries all over the world, who are interested in gaining a second international fully accredited master degree while staying at the home university. The program is based on the idea of equivalence of study contents and aims at supplementation of certain courses to extend knowledge and skills in specific fields of environmental sciences.
