Wiss-Nama Newsletter

WISS-NAMA is the newsletter of the Science and Technology Department of the German Embassy, New Delhi. The title is a combination of a German and an Indian word: WISS, an abbreviation of the German word 'Wissenschaft' (meaning science), and NAMA, a word used in Sanskrit and Persian contexts, standing for 'compendium' or 'handbook'.

News from Indo-German Cooperation

Goethe Medal for Indian Publisher Urvashi Butalia

The Goethe Institute awards the Goethe Medal, an official distinction from the German Federal Republic, which honours individuals who have displayed exceptional competence of the German language as well as in the international cultural exchange. This year, Indian publisher Urvashi Butalia was awarded with the Goethe Medal along with Lebanese author, Emily Nasrallah and Russian journalist, translator and historian, Dr. Irina Lasarewna on August 28, 2017. Urvashi Butalia is a writer and publisher and has taught at the University in Delhi for 20 years. She runs Zubaan Books, which focuses on the social sciences, especially feminist issues. She has regularly participated in both the Indian and global women’s movements, including with the organization Samta, which advocates changing the Indian law regarding violence against women.

Science Circle Lecture on 'The International Rule of Law - Yielding under pressure or Good for the Future?' by Prof Dr Georg Nolte

A Science Circle Lecture on the topic 'The International Rule of Law - Yielding under pressure or Good for the Future?' by Prof Dr Georg Nolte was organized by the German Embassy New Delhi in collaboration with the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) on August 29, 2017. The lecture began with an opening speech by Ambassador Dr. Martin Ney, who introduced Prof Nolte and also highlighted the role of Indo-German cooperation in the field of Science and Technology. Prof Georg Nolte is professor for Public International Law at the Humboldt University, Berlin and co-chair of the Berlin Potsdam Research Group 'The International Rule of Law - Rise or Decline?'. He is the chairman of the United Nation’s International Law Commission and an associate member of the Institut de Droit International. The informative lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A session and a networking reception.

Germany Alumni appointed DAAD Young Ambassadors

The DAAD Young Ambassadors 2017 kick-off meet took place in New Delhi from August 24 – 26, 2017. During the 3-day workshop conducted by DAAD, the participants worked together to understand their roles and to identify goals and strategies for promoting Germany. DAAD Young Ambassadors are a group of Indian students and scientists, who have either studied or done research in Germany or done an internship with a German firm and promote Germany as a higher education destination. They also got the opportunity to participate in an interactive session with Stephan Lanzinger, Head of Science and Technology Section at the German Embassy New Delhi, where they were commended on their achievements. Mr. Lanzinger handed over certificates of appointment to the DAAD Young Ambassadors. A speed-networking session was organized for them to network with the consortium members of German House for Innovation and Research (DWIH). Together they will all be working voluntarily to share their experiences with other Indian students who wish to study and/or research in Germany.

International X-Ray laser European XFEL inaugurated

European XFEL, the largest and most powerful X-Ray laser in the world, was officially inaugurated in Hamburg, Germany on September 1, 2017 by Prof. Dr. Johanna Wanka, German Minister for Education and Research and other Research ministers from across Europe. Dr. Wanka stressed the importance of the new international research facility saying that the establishment of the European XFEL has created a unique cutting-edge research facility, which promises groundbreaking insights into the nanocosmos.

Upcoming Events and Conferences

WaterScapes Symposium 2017

Under the umbrella of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH, New Delhi), together with prominent organizations from India and Germany, will organize its annual flagship symposium ‘WaterScapes’ in New Delhi from October 5-6, 2017. The event will bring together eminent scholars, leading experts and practitioners from Germany and India. In a knowledge transfer environment that bridges science, policy and practice, the participants will present their work, initiatives and ideas, exchange their views and approaches and jointly seek for commonalities and innovative solutions. It will aim to disseminate information on all water problem solutions in Germany and India.

Calls for Proposals: Funding opportunities and Scholarships

Open call for Indo-German Bilateral Workshops

The Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) invites proposals for organizing Indo-German workshops on areas of mutual interest with an aim towards creating platforms for substantive interactions between scientists/researchers from academia and industry. The workshops have to take place in India or Germany and to be designed around a specific research topic out of thematic areas relevant to both DST and BMBF, which includes thematic areas of 2+2 project calls. Persons holding regular positions in public or private non-profit research organisations, institutions of higher education and universities are eligible to apply round the year.

Visiting Advanced Joint Research Faculty Scheme (VAJRA)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention at Bengaluru on 8th January 2017 had announced the launching of VAJRA (Visiting Advanced Joint Research) Faculty scheme by the Department of Science and Technology which enables Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and overseas scientific community to participate and contribute to research and development in India. The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of the Department has implemented the Scheme. The VAJRA faculty engages in collaborative research in public funded institutions. The Indian collaborator and the overseas faculty will jointly frame a research plan and the application duly endorsed by the Head of the Institution will be submitted online by the Indian collaborator. Public funded academic institutions and national laboratories are eligible to host the VAJRA Faculty. Applications for VAJRA Faculty Scheme can be submitted from July 1, 2017 onwards.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships (IF) and European Fellowships (EFs) 

The MSCA-IF aims at supporting the international mobility of researchers through two sub-schemes i.e. the Global Fellowship allowing Europeans to come to India and the European Fellowship for Indians to go to Europe in one of the 28 Member States or in one of the 14 countries associated to Horizon 2020. Since the launch of Horizon 2020, 380 Indian researchers have benefited from MSCA grants. The MSCA provides grants at all stages of researchers' careers, from PhD candidates to highly experienced researchers, and encourages transnational, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary mobility. The MSCA is the main EU programme for doctoral training, funding 25,000 PhDs. The call is open to young & experienced researchers of any nationality, i.e. researchers holding a doctoral degree or at least four years’ full-time research experience by the time of the call deadline.

Fellowship in climate research at International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling

The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) in Hamburg offers fellowships to outstanding students interested in interdisciplinary climate research. Emphasizing the physical system, the School encompasses the broader field of Earth sciences, including economics and social sciences. The PhD program is open to applicants holding a Master’s degree (with written thesis) in physics, geophysical sciences including meteorology and oceanography, chemistry, ecology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics, or political science. Also students currently still working on their MSc thesis are encouraged to apply.

DAAD Call for Applications: Bilateral Exchange of Academics

To improve international relations and bilateral research cooperations between German and foreign universities, the DAAD supports exchanges of scientists and academics from partner countries. The basis of these exchanges is cultural exchange programmes and bilateral agreements with foreign partner organisations. Applications are invited from foreign academics and scientists who have usually completed a doctoral degree and work at a university or research institute in their home country. Based on bilateral MoUs with partner organizations in India the exchange of faculty is only possible for scientists and faculty at research institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), universities under the responsibility of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

EU Call for Propasals - ERASMUS+ Programme 

Numerous Call for Proposals have been announced under the Erasmus+ Programme, the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport as well as on the 2016 and 2017 Erasmus+ annual work programmes. The Erasmus+ programme covers the period 2014 to 2020. Any public or private body active in the fields of education, training, youth and sport may apply for funding within this programme. In addition, groups of young people who are active in youth work, but not necessarily in the context of a youth organisation, may apply to learn mobility of young people and youth workers as well as for strategic partnerships in the field of youth. Under the ERASMUS+ programme there are a definite number of calls for proposals having different deadlines till October 2017.

EURAXESS Science Slam India 2017

The EURAXESS Science Slam India is a competition open to all career levels starting with MA/MSc candidates (research-based or mixed) - from universities, research institutes or private sector, in all fields of research including Social Sciences and Humanities, Life Sciences and Engineering, of any nationality and age who are based in India. The EURAXESS Science Slam India 2017 will be organised in partnership with Global Innovation & Technology Alliance (GITA), the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) and IndiaBioscience with the support of Finnair on December 8, 2017 in Kolkata. The candidates must submit a short video explaining their project for a pre-selection. After that the finalists will perform and throw light on their project in an entertaining way in front of the review panel and a mixed audience who will choose the winner this year.

PhD Program at the IMPRS for Astronomy & Astrophysics Bonn, Cologne

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Astronomy & Astrophysics is a joint doctoral program between the Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy (Bonn) and the Universities of Bonn and Cologne. Students with a master’s degree or equivalent or about to finish a master’s in Astrophysics are eligible to apply for this program.

PhD positions in Solar System Science

The Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science (MPS) at the University of Göttingen invites applications for PhD positions in Solar System Science. It offers a research-oriented doctoral programme covering the physical aspects of Solar System science. It is jointly run by MPS and University of Gottingen. Research at the MPS covers three main areas, namely, ‘Sun and Heliosphere’, ‘Solar and Stellar Interiors’ and ‘planets and Comets’. The students collaborate with leading scientists in these fields. The call is open to students from all countries and offers an international three-year PhD program.

Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting 2018

The 68th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting 2018, dedicated to Physiology & Medicine and related disciplines including all aspects of medicine or biology, biochemistry, cell biology and similar areas as well as any area of clinical medicine., is going to held be from June 24-29, 2018. A group of Indian students and young researchers is sent every year to Lindau, Germany, by the Indian Department of Science and Technology and the Lindau Council to discuss major issues of importance to their fields with Nobel Laureates and also with other students from around the world. Participants should be below 35 years of age. Master students, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers can apply. Selected researchers will get an opportunity to stay in Germany for two weeks. The second week will include a trip to select German institutes of repute and is sponsored and organized by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru

The Indian Institute of Science was founded in 1909 by a visionary partnership between industrialist Jamsetji Nussarwanji Tata, the Government of India and the Maharaja of Mysore. Over the years IISc has become the premier institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education in India. The research-intensive institute offers many programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD levels. According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework IISc was ranked number 1 among Indian universities and is ranked number 8 among world’s best small universities. Besides that since its inception IISc has won many awards and accolades. The faculty undertakes a large number of research projects funded by various agencies incuding the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) among others. It promotes relationships with overseas universities and institutions and helps to define the scope of these relations through appropriate MoUs.
