Wiss-Nama Newsletter

WISS-NAMA is the newsletter of the Science and Technology Department of the German Embassy, New Delhi. The title is a combination of a German and an Indian word: WISS, an abbreviation of the German word 'Wissenschaft' (meaning science), and NAMA, a word used in Sanskrit and Persian contexts, standing for 'compendium' or 'handbook'.

3rd Meeting of the Indo-German Working Group on Higher Education

The 3rd Meeting of the Indo-German Working Group on Higher Education concluded in Delhi on 19th and 20th April, 2018. N. Saravana Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, led the deliberations from the Indian side.

Smart City Workshop in Aizawl, Mizoram

Heidelberg Centre South Asia (HCSA), School of Planning and Architecture Delhi, Observer Research Foundation and the Mizoram University, in collaboration with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, Institute for Human Development and other prominent institutions from India and Germany, conducted a workshop on ‘Smart City: Sustainable Urban Development’ in Aizawl, Mizoram, on April 27. The workshop brought together scholars, experts and practitioners from India and Germany, from both public and private sector, covering various aspects of a sustainable urbanisation, such as Inclusive Cities, Waste & Energy management, Infrastructure & Mobility, Planning and Design. The workshop was inaugurated by the Governor of Mizoram Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma. Mizoram University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. KRS Samsibava Rao highlighted the need to formulate a smart city plan that caters to the need of a particular population as the definition of smart city differs from one city to another.

Highlights from India and Germany

105th Indian Science Congress

The 105th Indian Science Congress was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and the Pride of India Expo by Hon'ble Union Minister of S&T, EF &CC and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan in the presence of Shri Adya Prasad Pandey, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University, Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary DST and other dignitaries. The congress focused on translational science for promoting affordable sustainable innovation. The PoI Expo had the participation of more than 175 organizations. It received tremendous response from the delegates and visitors.

Dr. Renu Swarup appointed as Secretary, Department of Biotechnology

Dr. Renu Swarup, Senior Advisor and Scientist H at the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) took over as Secretary, DBT on April 10, 2018. She takes over the role from Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, who served as interim Secretary, DBT. Currently Dr. Swarup is also Managing Director of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a public company that promotes innovative research in biotechnology with a special focus on startups and small and medium enterprises.

Calls for Proposals: Funding opportunities and Scholarships

Doctoral student positions at the IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems

Applications of Master's and diploma students in physics, chemistry, biology, or material sciences are invited for doctoral positions at the IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-systems. The IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems addresses the fundamental levels of Biosystems as provided by macromolecules in aqueous solutions, molecular recognition between these building blocks, free energy transduction by molecular machines as well as structure formation and transport in cells and tissues. The research activities are focused on four core areas: Molecular recognition of biopolymers, Photo-induced molecular processes, Cell-like systems and processes, Tissue-like systems and processes.

Green Talents – International Forum for High-Potentials in Sustainable Development

Applications are invited for this year’s Green Talents - International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has held the prestigious “Green Talents – International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development” since 2009. The award honours 25 young researchers every year. Thus, the Green Talents Competition successfully encourages the global exchange of innovative green ideas from various fields of research. Since its inception, the award has recognised 207 young researchers and scientists from 57 nations for their outstanding achievements and contributions to making their communities, countries and societies more sustainable. The award-winners are selected by a jury of renowned German experts and are granted unique access to Germany's research elite.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites a delegation of 15 international science journalists on a press tour to Germany on the future of work from 21 to 26 October 2018. This press tour picks up the topic of the "Science Year 2018 – Working Life of the Future", and sets out to explore the challenges and opportunities of the working life of the future. Journalists will meet researchers and developers at German research institutes, universities and companies.

PhD Position in Solar Physics

The department "Sun and Heliosphere" at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solar System Research invites applications for a PhD position in solar physics. The research topic will be in the field of solar physics, comprising solar magnetic fields including dynamo processes, solar variability and climate, and physics of the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region, and corona. Applicants must have a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in physics or a related field, including a written Masters thesis.

O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) is a young non-profit University situated in the Northern periphery of the National Capital Region of Delhi. The University is a philanthropic initiative of Founding Chancellor Naveen Jindal in memory of his father, O.P. Jindal, established by the Government of Haryana in 2009. It offers full time and part-time admissions to different programmes for both national and international students.
