It’s Women’s History Month, but do we really need an excuse to celebrate women and the vital role they play in our food system? Women produce more than half of our food worldwide. From the fields to the kitchen, women are leading the movement for healthy and sustainable food.

While by no means a definitive list, these 20 visionary women entrepreneurs are making delicious and sustainable food, and nourishing our community each in her own way. You can find them in Foodwise’s farmers markets year-round, rain or shine. Be sure to support these women farmers at the farmers market, too!

Join Us in Sacramento on March 20 to Save Market Match

Gov. Newsom has proposed cutting $33.2 million from the California Nutrition Incentive Program in 2025, which threatens to end Market Match. Foodwise will be heading to Sacramento with other stakeholders on March 20 to advocate for this vital food program. We're looking for shoppers who use Market Match to join us! Pop-Ups on the Plaza: Celebrating Black Women Makers

On March 30, celebrate Women's History Month by joining us for a day of delicious food, community, and family fun at the Ferry Terminal Plaza and Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Shop from 15+ Black women-owned businesses, and enjoy cooking demos and crafts.

Farmers Market Finds with Chef Alejandro Rodriguez

20 Spot chef Alejandro Rodriguez can often be spotted munching on leafy greens at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. This week, he shared how he'll be preparing the baby leeks and dandelion greens he picked up from Everything Under the Sun and Green Thumb Farms.

Napa Cabbage Kimchi

At the Foodwise Classroom, Aruna Lee of Volcano Kimchi shared this recipe for vegan Napa cabbage kimchi. You can also pick up a jar at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturday or at Volcano Kimchi's new brick-and-mortar in San Francisco.

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market: Featured Vendors

In 1989, the Barianis moved to from northern Italy to Sacramento before starting their own olive oil company. On Saturday, stop by their stand for olive oil, pressed and bottled at the farm.

Sandi McGinnis-Garcia, Sara Evett, and Adam Garcia run a diversified family farm in Watsonville. Visit their stand on Saturday for tulips and anemones and seasonal vegetables.

Mission Community Market Returns Next Week

Mission Community Market is back on Thursday, March 14, 3-7 pm. Join your favorite farmers market sellers—including new addition Brokaw Ranch with avocados!—in celebrating the first market of the season with an afternoon of good food and community.

Rudy Jimenez operates Green Thumb Farms in San Juan Bautista. In the Mission on Thursday, and at the Ferry Plaza on Tuesday and Saturday, stop by for veggies and greenhouse-grown strawberries and tomatoes.
