Hennepin County District Court judge Regina Chu is retiring at the age of 68.

Chu gained national attention in December during the live-streamed trial of Kimberly Potter over the killing of 20-year-old Daunte Wright as he tried to flee from arrest during an April 2021 traffic stop. The jury convicted Potter of first and second-degree manslaughter and in February Chu sentenced her to two years in prison.

Chu’s decision drew heavy criticism for being a much lighter sentence than the suggested state guideline of more than 6 years. Chu was the first female Asian American judge on the bench in Minnesota. State judges must retire at age 70.
