When Lent and Holy Week come around each year, CT projects editor Kelli B. Trujillo finds herself returning to a familiar song: What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest Friend, for this, thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? “This line from ‘O Sacred Head Now Wounded’ captures the utter wordlessness I feel as I contemplate the Cross,” writes Trujillo. In the wake of something as magnificent as Jesus’ death on her behalf, Trujillo finds herself speechless. “And so,” she writes, “I borrow language to thank him. We all do—and what it a gift it is.” The Wondrous Cross, CT’s 2022 special issue for Lent and Easter, invites us to borrow words throughout this sacred season. The articles reflect upon pieces of music, contemplating the divine mystery of salvation as it's been expressed through melodies and lyrics for millennia. As Trujillo writes, “May this borrowed language give voice to our own worship as we fall before Jesus in gratitude and thank the Savior who is truly our dearest friend.” |
