Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet knows a thing or two about Formula 1 rivalries, but I’ll respectfully disagree with his opinion that Max Verstappen would “smash” Lewis Hamilton if they both drove for Mercedes.
That’s not to say I think Verstappen couldn’t beat Lewis in equal machinery. It’s a battle I would pay money to see, but I fear we’ll never see it for Prost/Senna or, perhaps more appositely, Piquet/Mansell reasons!
Hamilton’s truly epic stints on hard tyres in Bahrain were yet more evidence enough of his A-list driving talent, and the way he fended off Max’s attack – whose tyres that were 11 laps fresher – proved that the fire still burns bright in his seven-time champion belly. Lewis needed all his smarts, as well as pace, to beat Verstappen on Sunday.
But I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: If Verstappen gets the best F1 car underneath him, he absolutely has the potential to unleash Hamilton-style domination with Red Bull. That is when the real “smashing” would happen. |
