Good afternoon. Welcome to your twice-weekly look at how generative AI is transforming the way we live, work and play plus the latest news and analysis.

Could artificial intelligence accurately diagnose your illness? Health insurer NIB is giving it a crack, having developed what it claims is almost the equivalent of a triage nurse that can fit inside people’s pockets.

It works by asking a series of questions about a person’s symptoms, then directs them to the health service that best suits their needs, whether that is a GP, hospital emergency department or home monitoring.

Meanwhile, AI has created a minefield for intelligence and law enforcement agencies as they battle new frontiers of terrorism threats, child exploitation material and scams. What AI is capable has got everyone talking, including ASIO, with Director-General Mike Burgess giving an address alongside Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw this week on its weaponisation.

Microsoft is hoping that its AI Copilot will become a major contributor of new revenue to its software business. Some analysts believe it could end up adding billions to the company’s top line.
