ne of my favorite WSJ. features this week is a profile of Alan Patricof, the chairman emeritus of Greycroft, the venture capital firm he started in 2006, and the youngest 85-year-old I’ve ever met. I first became acquainted with Patricof through his son, producer Jamie Patricof, and Jamie’s wife, Kelly Sawyer Patricof, the president of Baby2Baby, who we’ve featured in our pages. Alan is as colorful as he comes across in our story, which opens with him lamenting the closure of the Stephen Talkhouse, one of his favorite haunts in the Hamptons. (The venue has since reopened.) He’s so full of energy (once, when I was visiting the family, he’d just come back from biking from East Hampton out to Montauk and back), I wasn’t at all surprised to learn that he’d recently launched another business: Primetime Partners, a new fund that focuses on start-ups selling non-pharmaceutical products and services for older people. Patricof has a Rolodex to beat all Rolodexes, so it wasn’t hard for him and his co-founder, Abby Miller Levy, to raise the $25 million they were initially looking for—in fact, they closed their first round at $32 million. Alan wants to be an inspiration for others of retirement age who have an idea up their sleeve and, like him, are ready for a second or third act. “I want to get on a soapbox and say, ‘If I can do it, why can’t you?’ Don’t think about going to play golf,” he tells writer Josh Levine. “If you’ve got experience and there’s something you’re yearning to do, we will back you. And I will tell you, there are very few venture-backed companies run by older people.” Read the story in full below. Elsewhere in the newsletter, learn about what it’s like to be a disabled actor in Hollywood, 30 years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act; enjoy our monthly roundup of the best songs to listen to right now; and check out one writer’s interesting take on why this is the first summer in recent memory when there hasn’t been a song of the summer. Plus, don’t miss our latest My Monday Morning with the actor Lana Candor, whom I’ve enjoyed getting to know over the last couple of years. We first featured Candor in our 2019 Young Hollywood portfolio, which was part of the February Talents & Legends issue. I loved chatting with her at our dinner celebrating that issue, so it was fun to get to know a little more about her breakfast and beauty routines and how she’s spending her days at home.
