his week, I’d like to take you on a tour of Cavallino, Ferrari’s newly reopened trattoria located, along with the brand’s factory, in the Italian province of Modena. The restaurant, which first opened in the 1950s, was reimagined by the legendary chef Massimo Bottura and Parisian architect and designer India Mahdavi. Back at the end of 2019, I had the pleasure of traveling to Modena, which is a lovely, off-the-beaten path kind of place; visitors from abroad are usually there for one of two reasons: to visit the Ferrari factory, or to eat at Bottura’s three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana restaurant. In that sense, the collaboration is a perfect marriage between two masters of Modena. Bottura’s theatrical dishes feel right at home in the Mahdavi-designed dining room, a mix of retro and modern references, with a pixelated version of Ferrari’s prancing horse logo splashed across the wallpaper, Bisazza glass tile and vintage Ferrari Yearbook covers blown up into dining-room art.
