A weekly escape into the worlds of fashion, entertainment, design, food, travel, art, architecture and more.
fter Fashion Month settles down later this fall, one of the movies I’m most looking forward to catching is Judy. It stars Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland in the 1960s, during the last months of the iconic performer’s life. Zellweger’s performance is, I hear, mesmerizing, and it’s already generating Oscar buzz. This week I enjoyed reading an as-told-to interview with her about how she prepared to play the role—and sing several of Garland’s most memorable numbers, which Zellweger calls “belters.” At one point, it involved throwing chairs around a rehearsal space to tap into the singer’s volcanic emotions. “When you’re trying to come to know a person whom you’ve never met, there are tiny little things that you’re mining for,” she tells digital staff writer Lane Florsheim. “I just kept wanting to find the next.” Elsewhere in the newsletter, check out a Q&A with Jonathan Safran Foer about his new book on climate change, We Are the Weather; read about the new direct-to-consumer line from fashion designer Thakoon (a friend of mine from our days together at Harper’s Bazaar); and find out what went into sneaker company Veja’s new running shoes. Plus, don’t miss a lowdown on the revitalization of Paris’s marquee flea market, the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen. |
