his week, I’m excited to share our latest digital cover story, starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, someone I’ve long admired. My whole family is looking forward to watching the film version of Hamilton when it starts streaming on Disney+ on July 3—more than a year earlier than its original theatrical release date. With Broadway theaters still shut down, it’s a welcome gift, and a great way to add some joy and entertainment to everyone’s time at home. In David Kamp’s profile, Miranda discusses activism, what being a public figure is like these days and his famous “Gmorning” and “Gnight” tweets. I also love the black-and-white portraits by photography duo Inez & Vinoodh, who relied on a special photo assistant to help set up the camera and lighting for the shoot: Luis Miranda, Lin-Manuel’s father. It was nice to see what Luis tweeted about the profile after it was published, that it “captures what makes [Lin] so special to so many—intellectually gifted, politically grounded, light and funny, painfully introspective, team player. I know I’m his dad but this kid is special!” We agree. Elsewhere in the newsletter, read our latest My Monday Morning with writer-producer-director Janet Mock, who discusses her activism and what it’s like to release a TV show during a pandemic; get to know the crop of new, hilarious female comedians taking over Twitter; and take a look back at the highly influential music videos made for Björk’s Post, on the occasion of the album’s 25th anniversary. Plus, don’t miss a roundup of this month’s best music, featuring Phoebe Bridgers, Teyana Taylor, Bob Dylan and more. |
