"It’s hard not to look back.” Since May, Atlanta-based interior designer Keia McSwain has gained three new clients who hired her for residential projects. Ms. McSwain, who also serves as president of the Black Interior Designers Network, told us the surge in visibility and demand could be the start of something "amazing" for architects and interior designers of color, but that it also feels bittersweet. "We've been trying for 10 years to encourage the design industry and clients to partner with Black designers," she says. "We are now noticing an influx in attention from white counterparts who are finally lending an ear to what we have to say. There was a serious lack of representation." More from this week's cover story. |

Stuck at home, golf enthusiasts around the country are installing putting greens in their backyards. One firm that installs practice golf greens has seen an uptick in demand since the pandemic hit. “We haven’t missed a day of work," says Paul Johnson, owner of Tour Greens Mid-Atlantic. Mr. Johnson says he has installed greens as large as 12,500 square feet, and one that’s a replica of Augusta National’s 12th hole. And finally, Counting House columnist Beth DeCarbo proposes a solution to porch pirates and failed deliveries: package lockers. —Kerry Barger, digital editor of Mansion |
