Most expensive house ever sold in California! The second most expensive home sale in the United States! Superlatives all around on the news E.B. Solomont broke that fashion mogul Serge Azria has sold his oceanfront estate in Malibu to venture capitalist and internet pioneer Marc Andreessen for $177 million. The deal sets a record in the state of California, and it is the second-highest priced home sold in the U.S., following billionaire Ken Griffin’s roughly $238 million purchase of a New York City penthouse in 2019. Previously, the highest-priced deal in California was set by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who purchased the Warner Estate from media mogul David Geffen for $165 million last year. Read more about the mega-deal here. In time for Halloween, we talk to a Londoner who spent millions converting a cemetery caretaker’s cottage into a modern showpiece. Justin Maxwell Stuart was once in the habit of taking his dog for daily walks around Fulham Cemetery, a Victorian burial ground close to his West London home. In 2015, he noticed a For Sale sign had gone up outside the cemetery’s tumbledown, neo-Gothic-style, three-bedroom lodge house, originally built to house cemetery staff. Intrigued, he decided to contact the estate agent. That decision was the first step in an epic three-year, $3.3 million building project. The lodge has been renovated, extended and transformed into a contemporary house with an open-plan living space, a basement swimming pool complete with waterfall, and a primary suite that occupies the entire second floor. |
