Yep, you read that right—millions. And we're not talking about large châteaus here. These quaint cabins along Nantucket's Old North Wharf range in size from 350 square feet to 2,200 square feet. Some have sold for as much as $6.7 million each, putting them in line with some of the most expensive real estate in the world on a square-foot basis. “You can’t make sense of it mathematically,” said Henry Sanford, whose family has owned property on this stretch for decades. Once fishing shanties and workshops during the island's whaling heydey, these trophy properties are now sought after by sailing enthusiasts and billionaire business titans like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Charles Johnson and Charles Schwab, founder of the epononymous brokerage. Click here for a closer look inside the cottages of Old North Wharf. |

We also go inside a modern, glassy home in Canada's Saint-Donat. The focal point is an apple tree, planted in a courtyard and visible on all sides through glass walls. The tree is a nod to the apple orchard where eh spent summers as a child, creating houses out of empty apple crates in the center courtyard with his siblings. Eventually, the apple tree will grow through the opening above and shade the house. —Kerry Barger, senior platform editor of Mansion |
