Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function

Imagine this. You’re headed for work. You’ve got this dashing suit on, but it’s got a problem. The blazer droops at the shoulders. The breast pocket is too small for your phone… and the buttons look cool, but there’s just one set of them. Even though the fabric of the suit is pretty awesome though. You’d still think a bunch of times before wearing something that’s designed only to “look good”, right? Then why would you choose a briefcase or a bag that is just easy on the eyes and not tailor-made to your needs?

Anson Calder’s new line of bags and cases handles modularity beautifully and it’s probably the first and only bag to do so. There are five different aesthetic/size variants allowing you to gracefully swing between work and casual. Within the bag, is a carefully planned layout of items you’ll need to carry. The layout has been calibrated to accommodate all your everyday must-haves and no matter what style of bag you choose, the layout is adaptive, which means your items fit snugly!

The Anson Calder bags are bespoke, in the sense that when you buy the bag, you get to choose what you want and how you want it. The idea of a bag isn’t driven by “a space to store all your belongings”. With Anson Calder, the idea is rephrased, to read “a unity of spaces, expertly built for each of your belongings.”. Since needs and requirements change from day to day, Anson Calder has an individual storage for each item. Based on what you need, and when you need it, these individual storage units attach to an outer bag. These units accommodate all your necessities, from your gadgets, to wallet, to even travel storage (courtesy Humangear) and an umbrella (thoughtful, no?). Larger bags store all the units within them, whereas express attache bags can fit immediate requirements. Even when you don’t need/want the outer bag, you can carry an individual item in its bespoke case, allowing you to have a unified style across all your storage.

Having personally experienced an injury the past year, I can say that having to make a trip to get a scan in a huge machine was both inconvenient as well as super painful – almost more than the injury itself. That’s why I need to tell you about this amazing design idea by Madison, Wisconsin’s own Phillip Stankard.

Here enters, Treo, Advanced Mobile Imaging. This mobile device can easily wrap around the injured extremity to get a quick three-dimensional scan or can be laid flat for a two-dimensional scan which can be uploaded to the app for a review. Each Treo includes a soft imaging detector pad.

With Treo’s 3D imaging, the injured body part can be viewed as a 3D Volume due to the 180 degree flexible curved imaging emitters. Professionals can view the three scan later – hard tissue, soft tissue as well as fluids which can be exported for 3D printing. With the mobile app interface, it uses gestures commands to be be manipulated on the viewing surface.

Professionals can now use this more convenient mobile device to benefit patients with a quick and reliable diagnosis that helps get recovery on the way. Billing is also easier due to the optional credit card reader that is available. Treo is great for professionals to use in office, or even as they respond to an emergency situation outside of hospitals or clinics. I sure could have used this a year ago.

Buttons are out, touch-screens are in… and that includes devices beyond your smartphone. As is made clear by the Basilio coffee maker, the touch-screen offers simplification and intuitive interaction like never before. Unlike other pod style coffee makers with a myriad of strange buttons and cryptic symbols, the top-mounted interface of Basilio is straightforward and clear. There are 3 selections for the size of cup and one for the temperature. Additionally, there is single digital time display. What more could you ask for?!

Light Tales adds a whole new dimension to drawing and doodling! An immersive storytelling tool, this simplistic design encourages use of the imagination. First, kids can draw on the transparent film. Then, they can apply their perfectly fitted creation to the lamp and illuminate it on any surface. Using one or by pairing multiple drawings together with friends, they can tell an endless amount of stories and watch them come to life!

The “Out of the Bag” concept utilizes IKEA’s very own Frakta bag to form on-the-go furniture that’s easily assembled in seconds. No, seriously… seconds… unlike true IKEA!

Designed for those living somewhere temporary, in need of a quick fix for furniture, or even refugees, the Out of the Bag concept fits in and utilizes the Frakta bag to make it easy to transport. It features perforated flat surfaces and the Frakta bag to organize items and even hang clothes. Once the legs are pulled out, the bag – including the already set shelves – can be easily transported and installed with the same ease, again and again, making it always ready to use – hence the name “Out of the Bag”.
