"Free Willie!" was the headline on the front page of The Canberra Times on this day in 1977. Or at least it could have been if someone had had the foresight to build a time machine and travel back from cinemas around the country in 1993 to see Willie the Whale, an inflatable sperm whale sent out to protest whaling ahead of the International Whaling Commission meeting the following day. More than 200 people attended the protest, carrying the 14-metre long whale down to Lake Burley Griffin to make a statement. The next day, the IWC was set to hear allegations Japan was using loopholes to avoid regulations on whale sizes and protected species. READ MORE
