Last week, I attended Yiddish-vokh, the week-long retreat in the Berkshires for Yiddish speakers of all ages. I look forward to this in-person celebration of Yiddish every year — in fact, I’ve been going longer than any other participant, since the 1970s! It did not disappoint. I love being immersed in the Yiddish-speaking community, and I especially enjoy seeing the many kinder (children) there playing with (and occasionally yelling at) each other — part of the coming generation of fluent Yiddish speakers. They’re one of the reasons why I continue to create daily Yiddish content for the Forverts, nurturing a rich community of Yiddish speakers that they can join. |
