"Let the beauty we love be what we do." By poet Rumi
Born in China, Ying Liu demonstrated interest in drawing and painting in her early childhood. As a practical choice, Ying chose teaching English at her home university in China as her profession. Ying came to the United States in 1987 to pursue graduate studies, starting at The Ohio State University, and continuing at the University of Southern California and University of California at Los Angeles.
After completing graduate studies in 2003, Ying noted the art world in Southern California, and decided to again enthusiastically embrace her love for fine art in the form of drawing and painting.
Inspired by great masters such as Joaquin Sorolla, Anders Zorn, John Singer Sargent and many contemporary artists, she has developed a strong, loose, yet richly-toned impressionist style. She also increasingly desires to paint an expanding range of subject matter, primarily in oil - in plein air or in studio, but often watercolor and pastel.
In Fall 2003, Ying studied Life Drawing and Watercolors at Long Beach City College and life painting at Cal State Long Beach, and taught herself by viewing all available videos, books, and demos. Ying also studied with several master artists which she feels has helped her a great deal to achieve her success.
In Summer 2004, Ying studied in Florence at the Cal State University Summer Art Program. Greatly influenced and inspired by the Renaissance artists, her efforts earned her the acclaim of her instructors as one of Ying`s drawings was selected to be hung in the CSU Chancellor`s Office in a rotating exhibition within the 23 CSU campuses.
Ying's works won numerous awards including the First Prize in American Art Magazine's National Juried Exhibition and the Silver Medal Award in the 2010 Oil Painters of America Western Regional Show. She was cited in the December 2010 issue of International Artist and January 2011 issue of American Art Collector. Ying was invited to and participated in many national plein air events such as San Luis Obispo Festival and Borrego Springs Invitational and was invited to teach workshops and give demos. Ying has been an art educator for the last 10 years.
Ying is a member of Oil Painters of America, National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. She earned her signature member status with Oil Painters of America in 2012 and her signature member status with Watercolor West in 2017.
