Child marriage is prevalent in so many places around the world, and it lies in stark contrast to the concept of a loving marriage chosen by two adults. Child marriage keeps girls from getting an education, puts their health and safety at risk, and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. “I did not want to get married,” says 12-year-old Sarah. “I wanted to study.”
While her brothers were able to attend school, Sarah was prevented from doing so. Instead, she was expected to marry. Child marriage can be a survival strategy for families facing poverty, andmillions of girls like Sarah experience this same abrupt end to childhood.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Will you sponsor a girl today? |
The movement to sponsor 1,000 girls by October 11, International Day of the Girl, is in full swing. When you sponsor a girl, you can help reduce child marriage and improve her community. |
More than 12 million girls are married every year as children (that’s 22 girls each minute!), endangering them in the most tragic ways. Each additional year of schooling can increase a girl's future earnings by up to 20% Educated girls contribute to more stable communities. When women work, they invest up to 90% of their income back into their families |
Today, Sarah is in school and taking charge of her future, thanks in part to the impact of sponsorship in her community. We urgently seek sponsors for 1,000 more girls so they can live free from fear, grow in God’s love for them, and build brilliant futures. Please sponsor a girl today! | World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.
