In February of 2016, the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences established a coral nursery program on Roatan. This project is part of a joint partnership with the Roatan Marine Park, the Bay Islands Conservation Association, and the ICF. The goal of the coral nursery is to enhance local populations of the once-dominant staghorn (Acropora cervicornis) and elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata). Threats such as disease, sedimentation, pollution, hurricanes, and climate change have reduced the abundance of these species throughout the Caribbean by almost 90% over the past few decades. Branching corals are crucial to reef structure and create important habitat for fish and invertebrates. The main goal of these coral nurseries will be to provide an active method of restoration that will help reestablish threatened populations of staghorn and other coral species.
Dolphin Scuba Camp

Dolphin Scuba Camp is in full swing this summer, and everyone's having a blast! Each week, children participating in the camp, interact with and learn about our resident pod of bottlenose dolphins. A fun-filled week with various encounters, feeding, and training sessions show them what it's like to be a real-life dolphin trainer! On the Scuba end of things, kids are learning new diving and snorkeling skills, appropriate for their age and experience level, gaining an even deeper affinity for the ocean and marine life!
