Hi John! Today I want to share some thoughts about speaking truth to power. Because you have the power to change the world. Even if it seems the exact opposite. Onto that in a moment... Cartoon: A big confession... 👀 Dad Joke: Just chilling 🧊 Print: 2024's greatest hit! 🎯 Quote: From Judith Butler ✊ Original: For the person your world would freeze without 🥶 |
| This was pretty much my first LGBTQIA+ cartoon that took off. I still love it.♥️

| Friend: You’re so chill! Me: Thanks. I gave up. |
| Speaking Truth to Power: Resistance & Revolution |
| Butler, a philosopher, contends that non-violent resistance is not passive, but is in fact a “shrewd and even aggressive political tactic” (New York Times). In the face of injustice and inequality, thoughts and prayers accomplish little to nothing. It’s action that matters. Actions like speaking truth to power, protest, resistance, and revolution. I watched an interesting video the other day in which the activist was explaining why those in power prefer saying things like, “If you want change, vote!” Or, “Write to your representatives!” They prefer this because this is the least effective way of provoking real change. He claims that those in power do not want you to resort to things that really force change… things like strikes and boycotts, because those methods strike at the heart of power. This reminds me of something Ti-Nehesi Coates noticed… that the clergy during slavery could only beseech the slave owners to be more kind, and “all they could advise the victim was patience, obedience, and resignation”. Because uprising was too chaotic. Because abolition was too upsetting. To the system and to those who benefited from it. We are living in a time when speaking truth to power is more necessary and more dangerous than before. Resistance and revolution is more near and more forbidden. Like the wealthy’s reaction to the assassination of the insurance company CEO. Basically, it was, “Everybody calm down. You need us!” Zero grievability. Zero empathy. Because there is none. The wealthy and those in power (same thing) just don't get it. When a system is rotting from within and those who suffer under it recognize this, that system’s end is nigh. We’ve seen it before. We’ll see it again. I remember something an independent journalist I follow said, “It is a sin to be right too early” (Sarah Kendzior). It’s also prophetic. |
| Original: Life Would Be So Cold Without You |
| When I started this painting I wanted to convey the fragility we sometimes feel in our relationships. Even the transitions and the transitory nature our relationships can have. We love. We love deeply. We want our lover in our life forever. We contemplate what life would be without them. Buy this for the person your world would freeze without. |
| Happy New Year! I hope you feel bold and brave this year. Brave enough to speak truth to power and live your life authentically. I've got so many exciting things to share with you in 2025 and I'm so grateful to have you here. Much love my friend, David |
