Hey,
A while back, during our virtual Disciplined Entrepreneur Workshop, I noticed something interesting…
When I had attendees go through the “Values & Vision” exercise, the answers were all over the place.
And this is a good thing.
There’s no “one size fits all” definition of success.
Some people want to build a $100MM empire that disrupts an entire industry…
Others want a simple life in the mountains with their family…
And others want to travel the world while working 2-3 days a week…
I’m in favor of all of these things as long as they’re the definition that’s true for you.
But here’s what I found interesting…
Even though the values and vision people identified varied wildly…
… The way they were living didn’t.
Even though they claimed that they wanted to achieve a unique definition of success…
They were living the cookie cutter definition.
People who told me they wanted to buy a cabin in the mountains and homeschool their kids were working 60+ hours a week and burning themselves out to grow their business…
Even though they already had more than enough money to live their perfect life vision (and what they really needed was more time).
People who claimed they wanted to build an empire were wasting half their days on $10/hour tasks and shiny objects.
And this is one of the biggest problems I see with today’s mainstream self-help culture.
Most people are following copy/paste routines from Gary Vee and Tony Robbins without ever stopping to ask themselves if they actually want to live like Gary Vee or Tony Robbins.
To put it simply…
Most people never take the time to define and then reverse engineer what success really looks like for them.
So they waste years building their lives around someone else’s definition.
And even though they might look disciplined from the outside–they aren’t.
Because discipline for the sake of discipline doesn’t get you anywhere.
For example…
- Grinding under heavy weights for 10 hours week even though you hate the gym vs doing a few 30-minute workouts outside that you enjoy and keep you healthy
- Working 60+ hours a week to grow your business vs forcing yourself to work only 40 hours and delegating, eliminating, or deferring everything that’s nonessential.
- Waking up at 5AM to go through a 2-hour routine that doesn’t bring you any closer to your biggest goals vs. waking up when your body is ready and focusing on your most important work.
- Taking your spouse on a half-hearted dinner date instead of finding their “love language” and doing something to make them feel loved every day
The bottom line?
Put down the cookies.
Define what success means for you and reverse engineer the specific habits and routines that will help you achieve it.
Being disciplined isn’t about cold showers or early mornings or meditating until you’re one with the universe…
It’s about consistently doing the right things to achieve your unique definition of success and making progress toward the things that matter most to you.
If you want my team and I to help you redefine what success means for you…
And hold you accountable to putting the right habits in place to guarantee that you achieve it.
