The Real Minneapolis provides relief from the heat for people experiencing homelessness

Temperatures are expected to climb upward of 15 degrees above average across much of Minnesota this week, with highs possibly exceeding 100 degrees Wednesday and Thursday.

Some Minnesotans face a greater challenge in escaping the heat. For people who are homeless, the temperatures can be dangerous. A nonprofit organization called The Real Minneapolis is aiming to provide relief.

 
Minnesota heat wave: Tips to stay cool and safe during extreme heat

It’s officially the hottest time of year so far in Minnesota. A heat wave is raising temperatures across much of Minnesota into the 90s this week, and possibly past 100 degrees. It’s expected to continue through the end of the week into August.

Wondering how to stay cool? What precautions to take outside in the heat? Here are some tips on what you can do to stay safe during an excessive heat wave.

As UMN officials contemplate the future of a destination academic medical system, others wait. For nearly a year, one of Minnesota’s largest health systems has been trying to complete a merger. The proposed partnership between Fairview Health Services and South Dakota-based Sanford Health was contentious from the moment it was announced, drawing ire from union officials, private citizens and public officials alike. 

Minneapolis expands program to prevent child homelessness. A Minneapolis program designed to help prevent kids’ families from becoming homeless is expanding for the next school year, with the aim of helping twice as many families with children to avoid experiencing homelessness.

Jury hears testimony in 2017 police shooting civil suit. A federal jury is hearing testimony this week in a civil trial over the death of a man whom St. Paul police shot six years ago. Officers Mikko Norman and Nathaniel Younce killed Cordale Handy, 29, on March 15, 2017, after responding to a domestic violence call in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood.

St. Paul public sector relies on downtown property taxes, so why isn't it bringing its employees back?  Empty buildings could cause commercial property values to tumble, placing a greater burden on homeowners to pay for firefighters, teachers and other public jobs.
