MPR News AM Update

Highs Wednesday will be in the pleasantly mild 70s and 80s across Minnesota. Then we warm up as the week progresses with temperatures in the 90s expected throughout Labor Day weekend. Get the latest weather news on Updraft.

🎙️Coming up on Morning Edition: It's Wednesday morning, and the beginning of the only Wednesday of the Minnesota State Fair. Today marks the halfway point of the fair. Attendance is up and the weather has been mostly great. We check in with reporter Tim Nelson to learn more.

🎧 Coming up at 9 a.m.: Whether it’s flowing out of your kitchen faucet or along a creek near your campground, we expect our water to be safe . MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a state epidemiologist about how you can avoid getting sick from swimming in lakes or pools, and a public health professor explains his research into human-made chemicals in the water supply. We want to hear from you, too. Have you had a personal experience with contaminated water? Tell us about it. What questions do you have about the safety of drinking water or the water in our lakes and rivers? Call 651-227-6000 or 800-242-2828 during the 9 a.m. hour.

Today at the Minnesota State Fair:  One of our colleagues from NPR is reporting from the Minnesota State Fair this year and he'll join us at the MPR booth on Wednesday around 2:15 p.m. Pentagon reporter Tom Bowman is a very familiar voice to MPR News listeners. We're thrilled to talk to him about his work and you can ask him questions, too.

St. Paul church's removal from denomination highlights division over LGBTQ+ unions

Awaken West 7th in St. Paul was removed from the Evangelical Covenant Church, or ECC, in late June. The removal was due to being “out of harmony” with the denomination’s policies and teachings on homosexuality and gay marriage.

In 2017, Lead Pastor Micah Witham was suspended for giving a blessing over a same-sex couple in his congregation. His decision to officiate a same-sex wedding in 2020 ultimately led to the church's removal.

“It's not OK that my pastor could perform my funeral, but he can’t perform my wedding,” said
Alyssa Paulson, an elder at the church. “You can speak on my love in death, but not in life.”

What else we're watching:
Police departments pull school officers due to Minnesota restraint law. Hennepin and Clay Counties on Tuesday said they would pull resource officers from some schools  because of a new law that bans prone restraints and physical holds that affect students’ ability to breathe or call out for help.

Idalia strengthens into a Category 4 hurricane as it nears Florida's Gulf Coast. Overnight, forecasters increased the storm surge potential to as high as 16 feet while carrying maximum sustained winds of 130 mph.

3M "forever chemicals" settlement moves forward. The settlement awaiting court approval stems from  lawsuits over per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.”

It's big! It's bright! It's a rare blue supermoon! Here's how to check it out. We won't see this particular lunar twofer again until 2037, so here's what you need to know to make the most of it.
