🎙️Coming up on Morning Edition: Al Quie will be remembered this weekend as a former governor, member of congress and — above all — as a statesman. But for one family, his legacy is more personal. Quie was a church committeeman and a southern Minnesota dairy farmer when he reached out to a stranger a lifetime ago — and formed an unexpected family bond. Tim Nelson brings us the story.

Court dog Nova helps ease victims' trauma

It’s become a familiar sight for staff and visitors in the Stearns County Attorney's Office: a small golden retriever wearing a blue vest, padding along the hallways.

Nova, a 6-year-old trained facility dog, recently made history when she accompanied a young victim of sexual abuse as she testified on the witness stand, the first time in Minnesota.

Since the trial, Nova has been getting a lot of media attention for her calming presence and skill at providing reassuring support to victims.
 
Lower Sioux Community explores reconciliation through an 'honor tax'

The Mni Sota Makoce Honor Tax was created as another way Minnesotans and Dakota people could build relationships.

According to the website, people “who live in, work on, and visit traditionally Dakota land” may make payments directly to the Lower Sioux Community, a federally recognized tribal nation in Minnesota.
 
What else we're watching:
Montana return address making some think rebates are a scam. The checks list Submittable Holdings of Missoula, Mont., as a return address. A description with the check describes it as the "State of Minnesota 2021 Tax Rebate Program.”

St. Paul City Council extends public comment on marijuana smoking ordinance. State Rep. Athena Hollins, who worked on the state legislation, said the proposed ordinance is “decidedly inequitable” and would undermine the intent of the state’s cannabis legalization.

'This is about the message it sends': Carleton College ends legacy admissions. Carleton College now joins the rank of colleges and universities that have ended legacy admissions. The University of Minnesota scrapped its policy this summer. Across the country, more than a hundred colleges and universities have ended legacy admissions since 2015.

Crews continue work to contain 70-acre wildfire in Carlton County. The Minnesota Interagency Fire Center said the County Road 11 Fire — burning in swamp and marshland in Barnum Township, east of Interstate 35 — had grown to 70 acres, up from 40 acres on Tuesday.

Mexico’s Supreme Court decriminalizes abortion nationwide. The court's sweeping decision Wednesday comes amid a trend in Latin America of loosening restrictions on abortion, even as access has been limited in parts of the United States.
