🎙️Coming up on Morning Edition: Mayors of cities along the Mississippi River took the first step yesterday toward creating additional protections for the river. They voted to pursue a compact that could help prevent the river's water from being diverted outside of the Mississippi basin. Kirsti Marohn brings us the story.

Hmong immigrants put down roots on Dakota County farmland

The Hmong American Farmers Association closed on farmland just south of the Twin Cities in Dakota County last year. The more than 150 acres are home base for the organization and 20 families of Hmong farmers. 

“It was one skill that they had coming to a ‘foreign land,’ where they didn't know the language, they didn't know the culture, they didn't know the system,” Lillian Hang said. “It was the one thing mom and dad could do to provide for themselves.”

Gamers settle in Twin Cities for Catan national championship this weekend

People from across the country will descend upon the Twin Cities this weekend to barter for wood, bricks, wheat and sheep. Not for a trade conference — but a board game tournament.

The U.S. National Championship for the popular strategy and diplomacy board game Catan is being held at the Radisson Blu at the Mall of America Saturday and Sunday. Roughly 100 people will to compete over the weekend.
 
What else we're watching:
New Census data shows persistent disparities for growing communities of color in Minnesota. Minnesota’s communities of color are growing. That’s the good news from U.S. Census data released Thursday morning. The bad news? Minnesotans of color still face more poverty and unemployment than white Minnesotans.

New NASA report lays out roadmap for studying UFOs. NASA is releasing a new report from advisers on what it would take for the agency to study unidentified anomalous phenomena (also known as UFOs) scientifically.

Farmers drained jaw-dropping amounts of water from Minnesota aquifers in 2021. Drought and the nation’s hunger for mouth-watering french fries led large farms to pump significantly more groundwater than they’re allowed.
