🎙️Coming up on Morning Edition: Two new invasive insects have been spotted in Minnesota: Elm seed bugs and Asiatic garden beetles. Self-described "crazy bug lady" Krista Menzel has degrees in biology and art — and a huge garden. She was the first to report the beetles earlier this summer. On Morning Edition, she'll share how she made the discovery, and how she hopes to inspire others to pay attention to their surroundings and start documenting nature.

Nutrient producing microbes win over farmers but skeptics doubtful

A growing number of farmers are replacing some of the synthetic nitrogen they use to help crops grow with bacteria that produce nutrients for plants. Companies are pushing the microbes and farmers are buying them, but many soil scientists are skeptical.

Team USA star Taylor Heise of Minnesota expected to be top pick in new hockey league

Taylor Heise of Lake City, Minn., is expected to be Minnesota’s first choice in the new Professional Women’s Hockey League draft on Monday.

Minnesota is one of just six teams in the new league and has the first pick in the draft. “I’ve played in front of my Minnesota fans here for gosh, 15 years,” Heise told MPR News. “Minnesota has the best fans in the nation. It’s the state of hockey for a reason. So it would mean a lot.”

Heise, 23, is a hockey superstar who grew up in Lake City and skated for the Minnesota Gophers in college. In 172 games with the Gophers, she earned 225 points and was named the top college player in 2022.

 
What else we're watching:
West central Minnesota counties create local food plan. Four west central Minnesota counties have created what they say is the first multi-county regional food plan in the state. Primary goals include increasing local food production, expanding access to healthy food, and improving education about local food.

Norwegian Prime Minister talks Ukraine, climate change during Minnesota visit. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre sat down with Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., on Sunday. It’s Minnesota’s first visit from a sitting Norwegian prime minister in 15 years.

Man acquitted of killing 3 people, wounding 2 others in case that hinged on alibi defense. A judge has acquitted a Minneapolis man in a case that hinged on an alibi defense. Judge Kelly Olmstead on Friday found Antonio Dupree Wright not guilty on all charges.

Three men charged with operating a machine gun distribution ring on Snapchat. The men were accused of selling machine gun conversion devices, which convert a firearm into a fully automatic machine gun.

NASA releases 'baby picture' of a star that will grow up to be much like our sun. A new image from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope reveals what Earth's sun could have looked like in its infancy.

Poison ivy is poised to be one of the big winners of a warming world. Rising temperatures and carbon dioxide levels give the toxic vine the oomph it needs to grow earlier, bigger and itchier, scientists say.
