MPR News AM Update

Thursday will be cool and windy with clouds and some showers north while southern Minnesota sees more sun. Temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s, but those are near normal for the date. Friday will bring colder air and spotty showers statewide. Get the latest weather news on Updraft.

🎧 Coming up on Morning Edition: The City of Minneapolis wants to build a second village of indoor tiny homes. The first-of-its kind location, called Avivo Village, opened almost three years ago in the north loop neighborhood near downtown Minneapolis inside a warehouse that now includes 100 tiny homes. MPR news reporter Nina Moini visited one of the residents who has been living there for a year to find out what’s working.

🎧 Coming up at 9 a.m.: MPR News host Angela Davis talks with Minnesota scientists Bridgette Shannon and Jayshree Seth about what it’s like to be a woman in the science field — overcoming barriers and finding success in their research and individual careers.

And we want to hear from you, too.  If you’re a woman working in science, technology or engineering, what inspired you to go into your field? Or is there a young person in your life interested in science? What questions do you have for our guests about encouraging a new generation of scientists?

☎️ Call 651-227-6000 or 800-242-2828 during the 9 a.m. hour of the show.

Twins fans celebrate team's first playoff series win since 2002

The Minnesota Twins are heading to the American League Division Series in Houston after winning yesterday's game and sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays in a wild card series. On Tuesday, the Twins won their first postseason game since 2004. And on Wednesday, they won again — their first playoff series win since 2002.

What else we're watching:
Resident of tiny home village welcomes safety, security, stability of Avivo. Residents get a private room, three meals delivered per day and access to a case manager and other resources to help with legal, financial and housing goals.

Rep. Tom Emmer vying for promotion to majority leader post. Emmer’s plan is contingent on who replaces Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker. Current House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana threw his name into contention for speaker, a bid Emmer is backing.

More from the ouster: The House can't work without a speaker. How will it choose McCarthy's successor? The House is without a leader — and in uncharted territory. Crucially, it can't conduct any legislative work without an elected speaker. Members must elect a new one before they can get back to their to-do lists, which include funding the government to avoid a shutdown in the next 43 days.

What's the context behind Target's store closures? Target announced last week it will close nine stores in four states because of organized theft. The closures represent a small fraction of Target's nearly 2,000 stores across the country. But it leaves questions about Target's vitality in the retail market.

1 teen dead, 2 others wounded in St. Paul shooting. Authorities have not released the victims’ names or ages, or given further details on what led to the shooting. It happened at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday near the corner of Maryland Avenue and Hazelwood Street.
