Coming up on Morning Edition: Rep. Dean Phillips has been one of the more vocal members of Minnesota's congressional delegation lately. He's issued strong condemnations of the Hamas attacks in Israel. He's railed against dysfunction in the U.S. House. And he's flirted for several months with the idea of challenging President Joe Biden, a fellow Democrat. Phillips will join MPR News host Cathy Wurzer live at 7:40 a.m.

Coming up at 9 a.m.:  Fall brings a fresh slate of stories to screens and theaters everywhere, and we have some advice on what to watch. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with Star Tribune columnist Neal Justin about the new shows worth a binge, and with MPR News arts editor Max Sparber about the plays you can find in theaters across Minnesota. 
 
Book ban attempts on the rise in Minnesota schools

Bloomington’s monthly school board listening sessions are usually sedate, Monday night affairs in a room at the district educational services center. At most, a handful of people typically show up to ask questions or raise concerns.

The past few sessions, however, have been very different. Crowds have been bigger, prompting the board to open the auditorium to accommodate hundreds of residents. A single question is increasingly on the minds of those who want to talk: Which books should the district allow on school library shelves?

Board members in Minnesota and across the nation have long fielded questions about individual books. Observers, though, say what used to be occasional concerns about a single book from a parent or two have morphed into confrontations with groups and parents coming in with long lists of titles they see as inappropriate.

Wednesday’s game against the Houston Astros was a pivotal moment for the Minnesota Twins in the American League division playoffs — but the Twins’ loss means their historic 2023 season has come to an end.

 
What else we're watching:
Minneapolis debuts design options for redevelopment of former Kmart. It's the first time Minneapolis has debuted design concept plans to the public, though they are preliminary plans that only include greening, parks and walkways. Proposals for housing, businesses and more are still to come.

Art Hounds:  This week, Art Hounds recommend the play “The Pavilion” at Lyric Arts in Anoka, the Afro-Atlantic Playwright Festival at Illusion Theater in Minneapolis, and Owen Brown's interactive exhibit “Myriorama” at the Veronique Wantz Gallery in Minneapolis.

St. Paul police say 8-year-old boy was found safe.  The child was found safe and unharmed and authorities thanked people who helped in the search.

Astros power past Twins 3-2 in ALDS Game 4. Royce Lewis gave the Twins another big-moment home run — a line smash into the left-field seats with a similar trajectory to the one he hit in his first postseason at-bat in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series sweep over Toronto — but it wasn’t enough to keep Minnesota’s season going.
