Coming up on  Morning EditionMinneapolis now has its second commissioner of public safety, overseeing police, fire, 911 and emergency management. Former Hennepin County Chief Judge Todd Barnette was sworn into the job this month with near-unanimous approval from the city council. His predecessor, Cedrick Frazier, left after less than a year. Barnette is inheriting some baggage as the Minneapolis Police Department is under investigation for alleged discrimination and overuse of force. The Commissioner joins Cathy Wurzer to talk about his new role at 8:30 a.m. on Morning Edition.

Coming up at 9 a.m.: , Affordable housing is a challenge in every part of the state, but rural communities are particularly pinched. Tune in to hear a conversation MPR News’ Kerri Miller hosted last month in Two Harbors about how the North Shore region is experimenting with solutions to the housing crisis. This is the second in a four-part series featuring conversations from the Rural Voice project.
 
Judge sentences former Minneapolis police officer in assault case

A judge has ordered a former Minneapolis police officer to report to the Hennepin County workhouse next week to begin serving a 15-day sentence for kicking and punching a man in 2020.

Justin Stetson pleaded guilty to assaulting Jaleel Stallings in the week after George Floyd’s murder. In just three years, Jaleel Stallings has experienced Minnesota’s justice system not only as a criminal defendant and a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit, but also as a victim.

“I can’t escape the fact that the system that I believe was designed to provide justice to citizens protected my attacker, but not me,” Stallings said in testimony at Stetson’s sentencing hearing on Monday.
 
Minnesota's Emmer, other possible House speakers court Trump in race for elusive gavel

On Day 20 without a House speaker, Republicans found themselves starting over on Monday — bumbling ahead with few ideas about who will lead, what they are fighting over and when they will get Congress working again.

Eight lower-level Republican lawmakers are now running to be speaker, leader of the House and second in line to the presidency — none with any clear shot for the gavel. Senior-most among the hopefuls is Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, who is disliked by Donald Trump, but who reached out to the former president — as did others.
 
What else we're watching:
Cricket, with origins in England, gains steam in Minnesota. The sport of cricket seems to be having a moment. Last week it was added as an Olympic sport for 2028. Minnesota is set to have its first indoor cricket facility next month.

The Current's music director and host Jade is moving on to 'next dream.' The Current’s music director and midday host Jade has announced plans to leave the station. Over more than 15 years at Minnesota Public Radio, Jade has been a champion for music discovery and a signature voice.

From Carbon Sound: k3ko brings her unique style to the Minneapolis scene. k3ko started making and releasing original music in May of 2022. In just over a year, she has created a discography that captures what some pop stars spend their whole lives trying to achieve.

Judge rejects plea deal in fatal carjacking case. A Hennepin County District Judge rejected a plea deal Monday afternoon that would have given a man accused of taking part in a fatal attempted carjacking five years of probation.

Vikings outlast 49ers 22-17. Kirk Cousins hit the 300-yard mark for the 50th time in his 12-year career. Only four other QBs have done that by their 12th season.
