'To me, it feels a lot safer': Mankato daycare serves a diversifying community

Mankato continues to see a growth in diversity, but the lack of childcare centers catering to diverse families has led to community members stepping in to fill the gaps.

Winning Heart Childcare Center opened just eight months ago. It's already at 90 percent capacity. Director Anis Abdullahi says the lack of diverse daycare left parents frustrated.

“It's hard for them to entrust their kids with people didn't really understand or know what's happening in the daycare or even what kind of foods they might be getting.”

Testimony begins in sex trafficking trial of GOP fundraiser, Anton Lazzaro

An alleged victim of top Minnesota Republican Party donor Tony Lazzaro testified in federal court Wednesday that Lazzaro paid her for sex after connecting with her on social media.

In her opening statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Provinzino said Lazzaro “recruited, bought and consumed 15 and 16-year-old girls for his own sexual satisfaction.”

Lazzaro was a major donor to state Republicans, including the late Congressman Jim Hagedorn, who was married to former party chair Jennifer Carnahan. Lazzaro and Carnahan had been friends since 2016 and hosted a podcast together, and Lazzaro backed her bid to lead the state party.

Appetites: Move over southern food, what is northern food? Tater tot hotdish? State fair cheese curds? Snickers salad? While these are some Minnesota staples, it’s hard to define what “northern food” is exactly. Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl has been trying to answer this question and explores it in a new article with Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine. She spoke with All Things Considered host Tom Crann about it.

Building off history: UMN symposium showcases queer culture through bandana art. The University of Minnesota is hosting a Queer and Trans Ecologies Symposium March 23-25. It will include panels and discussions, as well as showcase the national touring Queer Ecology Hanky Project.

Art Hounds: Grand Rapids show celebrates ‘keystone’ creatures in our environment
. The “Keystone Characters” created by Layl McDill range in size from massive and tiny in her exhibit at the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids. Plus, two Twin Cities dance theater companies have shows.
