Coming up on Morning Edition: It's open season for Minnesota deer hunters. Barbara Keller,  the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' big game program leader, gives us an update on how the season is going.

Voters head to polls to shape leadership of Minnesota city halls, school boards

Hundreds of political candidates awaited the decisions of voters Tuesday, with dozens of city council seats and more than 100 school board posts hanging in the balance as well as ballot measures dealing with city taxes and classroom funding.

The odd-year election focused on municipal and school district governance was also a subtle tune-up for 2024 as groups tested themes and messages they plan to employ when the stakes are raised next year.

Tuesday is Election Day in Minnesota. And while it’s an off-year for most races, there are cities and school districts holding elections for positions in local governments. We've got the answers to many of your frequently asked questions regarding voting on Nov. 7.

 
Duluthians to choose in hotly contested mayoral race

Duluth voters are heading to the polls today to decide between incumbent Emily Larson, who is seeking a third term, and former city councilor and state legislator Roger Reinert, in the city’s most hotly contested mayoral election in 15 years.

Nearly half a million dollars has flowed into the race, a substantial sum for a city of 86,000 residents. In the latest campaign finance records filed with the city, both campaigns reported raising over $100,000.

 
What else we're watching:
Mixing solar and farming could be key to clean energy future. As Minnesota and the nation shift to cleaner energy, there’s a growing demand for land for new solar farms. At the same time there’s growing interest in what’s known as agrivoltaics.

Meshing '90s pop music and Bach, musician Paul Spring is 'Always Almost Home.' Paul Spring is a Minnesotan grew up in Winona and St. Cloud, and spent time living in Minneapolis. His new album, “Always Almost Home,” is out Friday.

The battle over land use: farm crops versus solar farms. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates the U.S. will need 10 million acres of solar panels by 2050 to meet the nation’s net zero-carbon goals. That means acreage currently used for farmland will become solar farms.
