Ag industry testing driverless trucks to solve labor shortage

A sugar beet cooperative in western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota is turning to autonomous trucks to solve a driver shortage. Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative says the trucks can make the company more efficient.

Minnesota law currently allows platooning of trucks only on freeways or expressways with a permit from the Department of Transportation. A MnDOT spokesperson said a change in state law will be needed to allow the trucks on other highways.
 
‘Desperately short-handed’ Minnesota businesses curtail offerings, cut hours to get by

Minnesota’s unemployment rate has been around 3 percent or lower for 24 consecutive months, which is among the longest stretches on record.

Oriane Casale, assistant director of the Labor Market Information Office for the Department of Employment and Economic Development, said the most recent data shows two openings for every unemployed worker. That’s the sign of a challenging environment for employers, she said.

Decree will let Minnesota Muslim women use donated breast milk for vulnerable kids. On Thursday afternoon, a Muslim legal expert will sign a religious ruling that will give Muslim families in Minnesota the OK to use donor breast milk for their vulnerable babies in intensive care units. The religious clarification is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States. 

Art Hounds: The past and present of Native art. The November exhibit at the Northwoods Friends of the Arts in Cook is “Native American Art: Past and Present," featuring work by local Native American artists. Off-Leash Theater Productions presents its second “Off-Kilter Cabaret” this weekend and The Commonweal Theatre Company stages the musical comedy “She Loves Me.”

13 alleged Highs members charged in expanding gang crackdown.  The continuing law enforcement crackdown on Minneapolis street gangs has resulted in the indictments of 13 additional people. Federal prosecutors allege in indictments unsealed Wednesday that the defendants are affiliated with the Highs gang and trafficked large amounts of fentanyl.

Biden and Xi agree to restore some military-to-military communications between the U.S. and China.  Both sides pledged cooperation that would bring the U.S and China closer to resuming regular talks under what’s known as the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement, which until 2020 had been used to improve safety in the air and on the sea.
