Coming up on Morning Edition: Minnesota is looking at a likely surplus again next year, but state finance officials are warning that the money is getting tighter and they say a shortfall isn't out of the question in coming years. House Speaker Melissa Hortman, DFL-Brooklyn Park, and Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, will speak with Cathy Wurzer this morning about their parties’ plans for Minnesota’s budget outlook.

Coming up at 9 a.m.:  What words or phrases does your family — and only your family — use and understand? MPR News host Kerri Miller will take your calls and talk "familect" with University of Minnesota linguist Anatoly Liberman. In one family, pizza crust is known as “pizza bones.” In another, children who weren’t allowed to say fart were instructed to use the word “foof” instead. A world away from conflict, Israel-Hamas war proves divisive for Minnesota Jews

The Oct. 7 Hamas attack and Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza strip has surfaced a wide spectrum of emotions for Jews. Some know where they stand, others are changing their perspectives, and some are unsure where to even begin. But people are guarded.

Amid the tension, Jews are seeking opportunities to come together and they’re looking for guidance.
 
‘We're not hiding’: Trans Voices Cabaret debuts in Minneapolis

Hal Sansone directs the Minneapolis Trans Voices Cabaret, a theater production featuring entirely transgender and nonbinary participants, highlighting diverse trans experiences and showcasing their talent in a politically supportive Minnesota.

“We’re getting on stage, we’re commanding attention in a public way. And that is important when we have trans people from other states fleeing to Minnesota like 'hey, we don’t hide here.' We’re going to be out,” he said.

Art Hounds: Holiday recommendations. It’s a holiday line-up this week for Art Hounds. La Grande Bande presents a French Baroque Christmas, St Croix Valley Chamber Chorale performs its Christmas concert and Trekkies unite for the play “It’s an Honorable Life.”

Listen: Local musician celebrating Hanukkah with song. Sarina Partridge is a musician, song-leader and educator in Minneapolis. And throughout Hanukkah she is hosting several sing-alongs for the Jewish community to take part in.

Las Vegas shooting suspect was a professor who applied for a job at UNLV. The attack at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas sent shock waves through a city still scarred by the deaths of 60 people in a 2017 mass shooting.

Israel presses U.N. to investigate charges of sexual violence by Hamas fighters. This week, the pressure on United Nations officials rose after a remarkable session on Monday that included firsthand accounts from Israeli responders of injuries they saw on the bodies of victims.

Texas woman asks court's permission for abortion because of pregnancy complications. A woman who is pregnant and seeking an abortion is asking a judge to allow it to be performed in Texas. She has health problems, and the fetus has a condition that is almost always fatal. Now, she waits for the government to decide.
