Coming up on Morning Edition: The State Emblems Redesign Commission still has more work to do after further slimming the field of new Minnesota flag options to three finalists. MPR News Political reporter Dana Ferguson tracked a meeting that went late last night and was at times quite tense. She'll bring us the latest in the state's flag redesign process.

Commission slims roster of potential Minnesota flags to 3 designs

The panel picking a new Minnesota flag on Tuesday shrunk the field of finalists from six to three, advancing designs with prominent stars but far different concepts.

The State Emblems Redesign Commission resumed its debate after the slimdown but could meet again Friday, with hopes of reaching a final selection soon. The panel has a hard deadline at the end of the year to pick.
 
As church’s Latino population grows, so does Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration

Parishioners at the Church of Assumption were eager to get a seat for the musical event to celebrate the feast day for Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico.

The annual feast day began to be celebrated by the church around the time the Latino community experienced robust growth in Richfield. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Latino residents have grown from 1 percent of the city’s population in 1990 to nearly 19 percent.

Death of Adam Johnson from skate blade prompts new look at neck guard mandates in youth hockey.
Johnson's death has renewed the debate over whether there needs to be uniform standards and mandates for neck guards and other safety equipment in youth hockey.

Fatal Shooting at south Minneapolis unsheltered encampment. Earlier in the day, a spokesperson for the city of Minneapolis had said the city would move back a planned eviction of the camp from Dec. 15 to Dec. 19. It’s unclear whether the fatal shooting could lead Minneapolis officials to change that plan.    

Police video shows man shoot St. Paul officer before officer fatally shoots him. At a news conference Tuesday, St. Paul Police Chief Axel Henry said it was important to release the video to the public quickly, even as the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation is still underway.

The United Nations approves a cease-fire resolution despite U.S. opposition.
The U.S. was one of just 10 other nations to oppose a resolution demanding a cease-fire for the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. This latest resolution is non-binding, but it carries significant political weight and reflects evolving views on the war around the world.
